Casual Events Medic

The Role

Through our event operations division, we support clients with professional medical provision, security, event control and wider operational support.

We are looking to build a flexible team of competent, professional and approachable Medics to provide event medical cover across a wide range of assignments.

As a WhatIfI Group Medic, you will provide immediate medical assessment, treatment and support to people who become ill or injured during events.

This is an event-based zero hours role, making it particularly suitable for people who want flexible work alongside other employment, study, NHS or ambulance service commitments, emergency service roles, military service or an existing portfolio of event medical work.

You may work independently, as part of a small medical team, or within a larger multidisciplinary event operation alongside other medics, security personnel, event control, venue staff and external emergency services.

Assignments may include public events, sporting events, outdoor activities, corporate events, conferences, training activities, community events and other temporary or managed venues.

Depending on your qualification, competence and the requirements of the event, your duties may include:

  • Providing first response medical care at events
  • Assessing casualties and determining appropriate treatment
  • Delivering treatment within your recognised scope of practice
  • Monitoring casualties and identifying deterioration
  • Providing basic life support and emergency care
  • Using automated external defibrillators and other approved medical equipment
  • Providing oxygen therapy where appropriately trained and authorised
  • Managing minor illnesses and injuries
  • Supporting the management of trauma and medical emergencies
  • Assisting higher-qualified clinicians where appropriate
  • Supporting casualty movement and evacuation
  • Requesting ambulance or emergency service assistance when required
  • Providing accurate clinical handovers to ambulance crews and other healthcare professionals
  • Maintaining clear and accurate patient care documentation
  • Checking medical equipment and supplies before and after deployment
  • Maintaining infection prevention and control standards
  • Communicating effectively by radio and other event communication systems
  • Reporting clinical incidents, safeguarding concerns and operational issues
  • Working closely with Event Control and other operational teams

All clinical activity must remain within your level of qualification, competence, training and any applicable WhatIfI Group clinical procedures.

About You

We are looking for people who can combine sound clinical judgement with professionalism, compassion and excellent communication.

Event medicine can be unpredictable. You may spend part of a shift dealing with minor injuries before being required to respond immediately to a serious medical emergency.

You must therefore be capable of remaining calm, organised and effective under pressure.

You should be confident communicating with patients, colleagues, members of the public and emergency services while recognising the limits of your own competence and escalating appropriately when additional clinical support is required.

Reliability is particularly important. Our clients depend on medical resources being available from the agreed deployment time and throughout the required period of cover.

Essential Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Hold a recognised FREC3 qualification or higher
  • Be able to demonstrate current competence appropriate to their qualification
  • Hold a current Basic Life Support qualification or demonstrate this competence through their existing qualification
  • Have the legal right to work in the UK
  • Be able to communicate clearly and professionally in English
  • Be able to maintain accurate patient and incident records
  • Understand the importance of patient confidentiality
  • Demonstrate professional and compassionate behaviour
  • Be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Understand the limits of their clinical scope of practice
  • Be willing to work evenings, weekends and occasional bank holidays
  • Be able to travel to event locations as required
  • Maintain appropriate standards of personal presentation and professional conduct

Appointment will be subject to appropriate pre-employment checks and verification of qualifications.

Desirable Experience and Qualifications

We particularly welcome applicants with experience in:

  • Event medical services
  • Ambulance services
  • Emergency or urgent care
  • Sports events
  • Festivals and public events
  • Outdoor or expedition medicine
  • Maritime environments
  • First aid training
  • Clinical education
  • Major event operations
  • Working within multidisciplinary event teams

Additional qualifications or experience in areas such as safeguarding, mental health first aid, manual handling, oxygen administration, medical gases, trauma management or emergency driving may also be advantageous.

Previous event medical experience is desirable but is not necessarily essential where an applicant can demonstrate appropriate clinical competence, professionalism and the ability to work safely within an event environment.

Working Arrangements

This position is offered on a zero hours contract.

There is no guarantee of a minimum number of hours and you are not required to accept every assignment offered.

Available shifts will be offered according to operational requirements, your availability, geographical location and the clinical qualification or experience required for each event.

Event work may take place during the day, overnight, at weekends or on bank holidays. Shift lengths will vary depending on the event.

Some assignments may involve working outdoors in varying weather conditions, prolonged periods on your feet or working in environments where access to conventional clinical facilities is limited.

You will always be expected to work within the medical plan, operational brief and clinical arrangements established for the event.

Scope of Practice

WhatIfI Group recognises that event medical personnel may hold a wide range of qualifications.

You will only be expected or authorised to undertake clinical activities that fall within your recognised scope of practice and for which you are appropriately trained, competent and equipped.

Holding a higher clinical qualification does not automatically require you to undertake every intervention associated with that qualification on every event. The equipment, medicines, clinical governance arrangements and medical plan applicable to the deployment will determine the services that can be provided.

Where a patient's needs exceed your competence or the resources available at the event, you will be expected to escalate promptly and seek appropriate additional clinical or emergency service support.

What We Offer

Joining WhatIfI Group means becoming part of a growing organisation with opportunities across medical services, event operations, training, security and outdoor activities.

We offer:

  • Flexible event-based work
  • Competitive rates of pay appropriate to qualification and role
  • A varied range of event assignments
  • Branded uniform appropriate to the role
  • Medical equipment appropriate to the event deployment
  • Operational and clinical briefings
  • Opportunities for continuing professional development
  • Opportunities to support medical and first aid training
  • Progression opportunities into senior medic, clinical lead, event medical management and event control roles
  • Opportunities to work alongside professionals from medical, ambulance, security, military, maritime and emergency response backgrounds

As WhatIfI Group grows, we want to develop a reliable core medical team who understand our standards, systems and approach to event medicine.

Our Expectations

Everyone representing WhatIfI Group is expected to behave professionally, treat patients and colleagues with dignity and respect and contribute positively to the safety and success of the event.

Patient welfare must always come before convenience.

Our Medics are expected to practise within their competence, maintain patient confidentiality, complete accurate documentation and raise concerns when they believe additional clinical support is required.

We expect our medical personnel to be approachable as well as clinically capable. At many events, our team may be dealing with people who are frightened, distressed, intoxicated, vulnerable or experiencing an unfamiliar medical situation.

Professionalism, reassurance and good communication are therefore just as important as technical clinical ability.

WhatIfI Group Ltd is committed to equality of opportunity and welcomes applications from people from all backgrounds.
